Artificial Grass
Artificial Grass is known by so many different names; it can be a bit mind-boggling if you are not familiar with the terminology. Here’s a quick guide:
- artificial turf and synthetic grass refer to all man-made grass surfaces in general
- 3G or third generation or 3rd generation generally refers to artificial grass with a pile height of between 40mm and 65mm, used mainly for football and rugby.
- astroturf is a brand-name and is best avoided as it is used by different people to mean different things and causes much confusion.
- sand-dressed, sand-filled and water-based surfaces are designed primarily for hockey
- MUGA surfaces can be artificial grass, sand, polymeric or tarmac and are intended for multi-use with a variety of sports
The individual sport pages below will help you to beat the jargon and make an informed choice of surface for your sports pitch project.
